Assumptions

  • The search covers a curated set of commonly encountered tags rather than the full DICOM dictionary.
  • Private tags, retired elements, and vendor-specific encodings may not appear here.
  • This lookup is intended for orientation and troubleshooting, not for replacing the official DICOM standard.

About this DICOM Tag Search

The DICOM standard defines thousands of tags to structure medical imaging data. This tool allows you to search a curated list of the most commonly used tags in Radiology. Whether you are troubleshooting a modality worklist or mapping fields for a PACS migration, finding the correct Group/Element ID and VR (Value Representation) is critical.

Who this calculator is for

  • PACS teams, interoperability developers, and analysts inspecting DICOM metadata.
  • People mapping fields during migrations, interface work, or troubleshooting header content.
  • Learners who want a quick starting dictionary for common radiology tags.

When to use it

  • Use this search when a header field name or hex tag appears in logs, scripts, or viewer overlays.
  • Use it to confirm whether a value belongs to patient, study, acquisition, or pixel data groups.
  • Use it during teaching or documentation when you need a compact tag reference instead of the full standard.

How to use this calculator

  1. Type a Tag ID (e.g., `0010` or `0010,0010`).
  2. Or type a Keyword (e.g., `Patient`, `Slice`, `Date`).
  3. The table below will update instantly with matches.

Key assumptions

  • The search covers a curated set of commonly encountered tags rather than the full DICOM dictionary.
  • Private tags, retired elements, and vendor-specific encodings may not appear here.
  • This lookup is intended for orientation and troubleshooting, not for replacing the official DICOM standard.

How this calculator works

DICOM tags are identified by a Group number and an Element number (GGGG,EEEE) in hexadecimal. Each tag also has a Value Representation (VR) which dictates the data type (e.g., DA for Date, PN for Person Name).

Inputs explained

Query

Search by hex code (without 0x) or by English name. Case insensitive.

Understanding your results

The results show the Tag ID (Group,Element), the standard Attribute Name, and the VR (Value Representation).

Key Features

  • Search by ID or Name
  • Shows VR (Value Representation)
  • Filters instantly

Tips & Best Practices

  • Common groups: 0008 (Study Info), 0010 (Patient Info), 0018 (Acquisition), 0028 (Image Pixel).
  • Private tags (odd group numbers like 0009, 0019) are vendor-specific and not listed here.

Glossary of Terms

VR
Value Representation. The data type of the tag (e.g., SH = Short String, UI = Unique Identifier).
Group
The first 4 hex digits indicating the category of the data.
Element
The last 4 hex digits identifying the specific item within the group.
