GFR Calculator accuracy and testing
This page documents how Calwarden builds trust for this calculator: source notes, regression-style default tests, limitations, assumptions, unit handling, rounding, and visible change history.
Formula source
- This calculator uses the **CKD-EPI 2021 Equation**, which is currently recommended by the National Kidney Foundation. It accounts for age, sex, and serum creatinine. Unlike older formulas (MDRD), the 2021 version removed the race coefficient to reduce bias in clinical care.
Test cases
Default input regression check
Generated from the checked-in default inputs and calculate function.
Inputs
- Serum Creatinine: 1 mg/dL
- Age: 50
- Gender: Male
Expected outputs
- eGFR: 91.7 mL/min/1.73m²
- CKD Stage: Normal
Known limitations
- Not for acute kidney injury (AKI). Only valid for stable adults (18+).
Assumptions
- The estimate uses the CKD-EPI 2021 creatinine equation for stable adults.
- It assumes serum creatinine is from a routine steady-state lab value rather than an acute medical event.
- eGFR is an estimate and may be less reliable at extremes of muscle mass, diet, or body size.
Unit handling
- Serum Creatinine accepts values in mg/dL.
- Age accepts numeric values.
- Gender accepts one of the configured options.
- eGFR is displayed in mL/min/1.73m².
Rounding rules
- Number displays use up to 2 decimal places in the calculator UI.
