GPA Planning accuracy and testing
This page documents how Calwarden builds trust for this calculator: source notes, regression-style default tests, limitations, assumptions, unit handling, rounding, and visible change history.
Formula source
- The formula solves for 'X' (additional credits) where: **Target = [(Current GPA × Current Credits) + (4.0 × X)] / (Current Credits + X)** It assumes you get a 4.0 in all future classes because that is the fastest way to raise a GPA.
Test cases
Default input regression check
Generated from the checked-in default inputs and calculate function.
Inputs
- Current GPA: 3.2
- Credits Earned: 60
- Target GPA: 3.5
Expected outputs
- Credits Needed (at 4.0): 36 Credits
- Approx. Classes (3cr): 12
- Feasibility: Doable
Known limitations
- Assumes you get a 4.0 in every future class. If you get a 3.7, it will take even longer.
Assumptions
- This model assumes every future credit you count toward the plan is earned at a perfect 4.0.
- It treats current GPA and target GPA as values on the same standard 4.0 scale.
- Institutional rules like grade replacement, weighted majors, or transfer-credit exclusions can materially change the real path.
Unit handling
- Current GPA accepts numeric values.
- Credits Earned accepts numeric values.
- Target GPA accepts numeric values.
- Credits Needed (at 4.0) is displayed in Credits.
Rounding rules
- Number displays use up to 2 decimal places in the calculator UI.
- Input precision follows configured step values where provided.
