How this calculator works

The US uses a progressive tax system. You don't pay 22% on *all* your income just because you are in the 22% bracket. You pay 10% on the first chunk, 12% on the next, and 22% only on the amount above the threshold.

Inputs explained

Gross Annual Income

Your total income from wages, tips, and interest before any taxes are taken out.

Filing Status

Determines the size of your Standard Deduction and the width of your tax brackets.

Understanding your results

The Effective Tax Rate is your actual tax burden (Total Tax / Total Income). It is always lower than your marginal bracket rate. Annual After-Tax is what remains for state tax, FICA, and spending.

Example scenarios

Single Filer $50k

Standard Deduction $14,600. Taxable $35,400. Tax ~$3,800. Effective Rate ~7.6%.

Married Filer $100k

Standard Deduction $29,200. Taxable $70,800. Tax ~$7,800. Effective Rate ~7.8%.

Key Features

  • 2024 Tax Brackets
  • Standard Deduction included
  • Progressive calculation

Things to Keep in Mind

Does not account for credits (like Child Tax Credit), itemized deductions, or State/Local taxes.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Contributing to a traditional 401(k) or IRA reduces your taxable income, potentially lowering your tax bill.
  • Don't forget State Taxes and FICA (Social Security/Medicare), which are separate from this Federal calculation.

Glossary of Terms

Standard Deduction
A specific dollar amount that reduces the income you're taxed on ($14,600 for Single in 2024).
Marginal Tax Rate
The tax rate applied to the very last dollar you earned (your top bracket).
Effective Tax Rate
The average rate you pay on your total income.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 2024 Standard Deduction?
For the 2024 tax year, the Standard Deduction is $14,600 for Single filers and $29,200 for Married Filing Jointly.
Does moving to a higher bracket reduce my take-home pay?
No. Only the income *above* the bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate. Earning more money always results in more take-home pay.
