RMD Calculator accuracy and testing

This page documents how Calwarden builds trust for this calculator: source notes, regression-style default tests, limitations, assumptions, unit handling, rounding, and visible change history.

Formula source

  • RMD = Account Balance / Life Expectancy Factor. The factor comes from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (for most retirees). As you get older, the factor decreases, meaning you must withdraw a larger percentage of your account.

Test cases

Default input regression check

Generated from the checked-in default inputs and calculate function.

Inputs

  • RMD Table Preset: irs_uniform_lifetime_2026
  • Age at Year End: 73
  • Account Balance: $500,000
  • Manual Distribution Period: 26.5

Expected outputs

  • RMD Amount: $18,867.92
  • Distribution Period: 26.5 Years

  • The calculation runs locally in the browser using the current checked-in calculator definition.

Unit handling

  • RMD Table Preset accepts one of the configured options.
  • Age at Year End accepts numeric values.
  • Account Balance accepts values in $.
  • Manual Distribution Period accepts numeric values.
  • RMD Amount is displayed as currency.
  • Distribution Period is displayed in Years.

Rounding rules

  • Number displays use up to 2 decimal places in the calculator UI.
