Assumptions

  • The footprint area already includes the roof plan area you want to cover, including overhangs if needed.
  • Pitch is represented by a preset multiplier rather than a custom measured slope.
  • Waste should be zero or greater and the bundle estimate assumes three bundles per square.

About this Roofing Materials

Estimating roofing material requires accounting for the slope (pitch) of the roof. A steeper roof has significantly more surface area than a flat one with the same footprint. This calculator applies the correct pitch multiplier to give you an accurate material list.

Who this calculator is for

  • Homeowners estimating shingles for a replacement or new roof project.
  • Roofers converting ground footprint area into roofing squares and bundle counts.
  • Anyone comparing how roof pitch and waste factors change material quantities.

When to use it

  • Estimate shingle bundles from footprint area and roof pitch.
  • Translate adjusted roof area into roofing squares for ordering and pricing.
  • Add waste for valleys, cuts, and complex roof geometry during planning.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the Footprint Area (Length x Width of the building on the ground, including overhangs).
  2. Select the Roof Pitch (e.g., 6:12).
  3. Set a Waste % (10-15% is standard for cuts and hips/valleys).
  4. The result tells you how many Bundles and Squares to buy.

Key assumptions

  • The footprint area already includes the roof plan area you want to cover, including overhangs if needed.
  • Pitch is represented by a preset multiplier rather than a custom measured slope.
  • Waste should be zero or greater and the bundle estimate assumes three bundles per square.

How this calculator works

1. Pitch Multiplier: Calculated using Pythagoras ($a^2+b^2=c^2$). A 4:12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.054. 2. Actual Area = Footprint × Multiplier × Waste. 3. Squares = Area / 100. 4. Bundles = Squares × 3.

Inputs explained

Footprint Area

The flat area covered by the roof. If your house is 30x50, the footprint is 1,500 sq ft.

Pitch

The rise over run. A 4:12 pitch means the roof rises 4 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run.

Bundles

Standard 3-tab or architectural shingles typically come 3 bundles to a Square.

Understanding your results

Roofing is sold by the 'Square' (100 sq ft). You will likely buy 3 bundles per square. The Actual Area is the surface you need to cover with underlayment (felt).

Example scenarios

Low Slope

1,500 sq ft footprint. 4:12 Pitch. Waste 10%. Needs ~18 Squares (54 bundles).

Steep Slope

1,500 sq ft footprint. 12:12 Pitch (45 degrees). Waste 10%. Needs ~24 Squares (72 bundles).

Key Features

  • Pitch Multipliers included
  • Bundle Estimator
  • Squares Calculation

Tips & Best Practices

  • Measure the ground dimensions and add 1-2 feet for overhangs before calculating footprint.
  • Complex roofs with many valleys and hips require higher waste factors (15-20%).
  • Always round up. Running out of shingles means mismatched dye lots.

Glossary of Terms

Square
A unit of measure in roofing equal to 100 square feet.
Pitch
The steepness of the roof.
Underlayment
Water-resistant material installed under shingles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a roofing 'Square'?
In roofing terms, a Square equals 100 square feet of roof area. If your roof is 2,000 sq ft, it is 20 Squares.
How many bundles of shingles are in a Square?
Typically, 3 bundles of standard 3-tab or architectural shingles cover 1 Square (100 sq ft). Heavier premium shingles might be 4 bundles per square.
How do I calculate pitch?
Pitch is the rise (vertical) over run (horizontal). If the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of length, it is a 6:12 pitch.
Does this include ridge caps?
No. This calculates field shingles only. You need to calculate ridge caps (linear feet) separately, often using special bundles.
