Assumptions

  • This tool only edits a small set of PID fields in a simple pipe-delimited message and leaves the rest of the message unchanged.
  • It does not inspect NK1, GT1, IN1, OBX, NTE, Z-segments, attachments, or free-text narrative fields for identifiers.
  • The output is intended as a starting point for manual review, not as a claim of full de-identification or regulatory compliance.

About this De-identifier

Troubleshooting often requires sharing message structure with teammates, vendors, or support staff. This scrubber helps by replacing a few common PID-based patient identifiers with placeholders, making it easier to create a testable example while still reminding you to manually review the rest of the message.

Who this calculator is for

  • Interface analysts preparing an HL7 example for troubleshooting, demos, or internal documentation.
  • Developers who need a quick first pass at removing obvious patient identifiers from a v2 message.
  • Teams teaching HL7 structure who want realistic-looking examples without using live demographic values.

When to use it

  • Use it when you want to replace common PID identifiers before sharing a message snippet.
  • Use it as an early cleanup step before pasting a message into viewers, parsers, tickets, or chat threads.
  • Use it to generate a lower-risk demo message while preserving overall segment layout.

How to use this calculator

  1. Paste your Raw HL7 Message.
  2. The tool automatically scans for the PID segment.
  3. It replaces fields like Name, DOB, Address, and ID with randomized or generic placeholders.
  4. Copy the Anonymized Message.

How this calculator works

The scrubber uses regex to find the PID segment. It then splits the fields by the pipe `|` delimiter and overwrites specific indices (PID-2, PID-3, PID-5, PID-7, PID-11) with dummy data.

Inputs explained

Raw Message

The original message containing real patient data.

Understanding your results

The output keeps the same message structure but swaps a few common PID values for placeholders. You still need to manually inspect the rest of the message for identifiers in other segments, comments, attachments, or custom fields.

Key Features

  • PID Segment Scrubbing
  • Client-Side Privacy
  • Generic Placeholders

Tips & Best Practices

  • Always manually verify the output before sharing. Some interfaces put PHI in unusual fields (like Z-segments or NTE comments) which this tool might miss.
  • Local browser processing reduces exposure, but you should still avoid using live PHI when a synthetic example will do.

Glossary of Terms

PHI
Protected Health Information. Any information in a medical record that can be used to identify an individual.
De-identification
The process of removing identifying information from data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the data sent to a server?
The scrubbing happens in the browser, but you should still prefer synthetic or already-scrubbed content whenever possible.
Does it scrub NK1 segments?
Currently, this simple tool targets the primary PID segment. You should manually check NK1 (Next of Kin) and IN1 (Insurance) segments.
What about MRN?
It replaces PID-2 and PID-3 (IDs) with a random dummy ID.
Is this 100% HIPAA compliant?
No. It is a helper for a few common PID fields only. You are responsible for confirming that no PHI remains elsewhere in the message.
Can I use this for bulk files?
It works best for single messages or small batches pasted into the text box.
