Assumptions

  • This calculator assumes both GPA values use the same unweighted 4.0 grading scale.
  • All entered credits are treated as GPA-bearing credits rather than pass/fail, audit, or transfer-only hours.
  • School-specific grade replacement, repeated-course policies, and institutional rounding may change the official transcript result.

About this Cumulative GPA

Your cumulative GPA reflects your performance over your entire academic career. A single semester can raise or lower this number, but the impact diminishes as you earn more credits. This calculator helps you see exactly how your recent grades will change your total standing.

Who this calculator is for

  • College students projecting how a new term will change the GPA shown on their transcript.
  • Transfer, scholarship, or pre-professional applicants checking whether an upcoming semester moves them past a cutoff.
  • Academic advisors reviewing how current-term performance affects long-term standing.

When to use it

  • Combine your current cumulative GPA with a finished or projected semester GPA to estimate your new overall average.
  • Compare multiple term outcomes before registration, finals, or scholarship review deadlines.
  • Measure how much one strong or weak semester can realistically change a GPA after many earned credits.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your Current Cumulative GPA (found on your transcript).
  2. Enter the Total Credits Earned prior to this semester.
  3. Input your New Semester GPA and the New Credits attempted.
  4. The result shows your updated Cumulative GPA.

Key assumptions

  • This calculator assumes both GPA values use the same unweighted 4.0 grading scale.
  • All entered credits are treated as GPA-bearing credits rather than pass/fail, audit, or transfer-only hours.
  • School-specific grade replacement, repeated-course policies, and institutional rounding may change the official transcript result.

How this calculator works

The calculator converts your current GPA back into total 'Quality Points' (Current GPA × Current Credits). It adds the new points from the current semester, then divides the new total points by the new total credits.

Inputs explained

Current Cumulative GPA

Your overall GPA before accounting for the new semester.

Credits Earned So Far

The total number of graded credit hours completed before this semester.

New Semester GPA

Your GPA for just the current term.

Understanding your results

The Change field shows whether your GPA went up or down. Note that if you have a lot of existing credits (e.g., Senior year), even a 4.0 semester might only raise your cumulative GPA by 0.01 or 0.02.

Example scenarios

Freshman

Current GPA 3.0 (15 credits). Semester GPA 4.0 (15 credits). New Cumulative: 3.5. (Big jump!)

Senior

Current GPA 3.0 (105 credits). Semester GPA 4.0 (15 credits). New Cumulative: 3.125. (Small jump.)

  • Total Credit Sum
  • Weighted Logic

Tips & Best Practices

  • The more credits you have, the harder it is to change your GPA ('GPA inertia').
  • Retaking a class often replaces the old grade in the calculation, which has a much bigger impact than just getting a good grade in a new class.

Glossary of Terms

Cumulative
Increasing or increased in quantity, degree, or force by successive additions. In this case, encompassing all semesters.
Credit Hours
The unit of measurement for course value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one bad semester ruin my GPA?
It depends on how many credits you already have. Early in college, yes, it has a big impact. Later in college, your GPA is more stable and 'heavier' to move.
Does cumulative GPA include transfer credits?
Typically, no. Most colleges transfer the *credits* but not the *grades*. Your GPA at your new school usually starts fresh or only includes classes taken there. Check your registrar's policy.
