About this Semester GPA

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is one of the most important numbers in your academic career. Whether you are aiming for the Dean's List or just trying to maintain eligibility, knowing your current semester GPA is crucial. This calculator lets you input your grades and credit hours to see exactly where you stand.

Who this calculator is for

  • College and high-school students estimating the GPA for their current term from class-level grades.
  • Scholarship or athletics students checking whether this semester stays above an eligibility threshold.
  • Advisors helping someone compare several end-of-term grade scenarios before finals are complete.

When to use it

  • Calculate your semester GPA from a mix of course grades and credit hours.
  • Stress-test how one class changing from a B to an A- affects the term average.
  • Use projected term results before feeding them into a cumulative GPA plan.

How to use this calculator

  1. Select your Letter Grade for each class (A, B, C, etc.).
  2. Enter the Credits (usually 3 or 4) for that class.
  3. Leave rows blank if you are taking fewer than 5 classes.
  4. The calculator computes your Semester GPA instantly.

Key assumptions

  • This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale represented by the built-in grade options.
  • Only classes with both a selected grade and positive credits are included in the average.
  • Withdrawals, pass/fail courses, repeated-course replacement, and school-specific grade scales may change the official GPA.

How this calculator works

GPA is a weighted average. It is calculated by: 1. Converting each letter grade to points (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.). 2. Multiplying the grade points by the class credits (Quality Points). 3. Summing all Quality Points. 4. Dividing by the total number of credits attempted.

Inputs explained

Letter Grade

The grade you received or expect to receive. We use the standard 4.0 scale with plus/minus grading.

Credits

The value of the course. Most college courses are 3 credits; labs might be 1; intensive language courses might be 4 or 5.

Understanding your results

A 4.0 is perfect (straight As). A 2.0 is typically a 'C' average, often the minimum required to graduate or maintain financial aid.

Example scenarios

Dean's List

3 classes with 'A', 1 class with 'B', all 3 credits. (4*3 + 4*3 + 4*3 + 3*3) / 12 = 3.75 GPA.

Mixed Bag

Math (4cr) 'C', English (3cr) 'A'. Points: (2*4) + (4*3) = 20. Total Credits: 7. GPA = 20/7 = 2.85.

Key Features

  • Standard 4.0 Scale
  • Weighted by Credits
  • Up to 5 Courses

Tips & Best Practices

  • Retaking a class? If your school replaces the grade, calculate using only the new grade.
  • Pass/Fail classes usually do not affect your GPA (check your school's policy).

Glossary of Terms

Quality Points
The product of the grade points and credit hours for a specific course.
Credit Hour
A unit of measuring educational credit, usually based on the number of classroom hours per week.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?
GPA is calculated by converting your letter grades into points (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.), multiplying those points by the credit hours for the class, summing the total points, and dividing by the total credit hours.
What is a good GPA?
The average college GPA is around 3.1. A GPA above 3.5 is generally considered 'good' and often qualifies for honors. 4.0 is the highest possible unweighted GPA.
Do withdrawals (W) affect GPA?
Usually, no. A 'W' grade indicates you withdrew from the class. It appears on your transcript but has no impact on your GPA calculation.
