Assumptions

  • Each score is treated as the current average for that category, not a list of individual assignment grades.
  • Only categories with a positive weight are included in the calculation.
  • If your class uses a raw points system or drops the lowest score, the official course grade may differ.

About this Weighted Grade

Most college and high school courses use a weighted grading system. This means a test is worth much more than a homework assignment. This calculator lets you input your average score for each category (Homework, Quizzes, Exams) and its weight to determine your final grade.

Who this calculator is for

  • Students in syllabus-based courses where homework, quizzes, exams, and finals each have different weights.
  • Teachers and tutors checking whether category averages match the current gradebook total.
  • Anyone trying to understand how much a strong or weak exam matters relative to smaller assignments.

When to use it

  • Calculate your current class average when different categories count different amounts.
  • Model what happens if one category score improves before the term ends.
  • Estimate your standing so you can decide what score you need on the final component.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the Score you have for a category (e.g., 90% average on Homework).
  2. Enter the Weight of that category from your syllabus (e.g., 20%).
  3. Repeat for all categories.
  4. The result is your Weighted Average.

Key assumptions

  • Each score is treated as the current average for that category, not a list of individual assignment grades.
  • Only categories with a positive weight are included in the calculation.
  • If your class uses a raw points system or drops the lowest score, the official course grade may differ.

How this calculator works

The formula is: Sum of (Score × Weight) / Sum of Weights. Example: Homework: 90 × 0.20 = 18 Tests: 80 × 0.40 = 32 Final: 85 × 0.40 = 34 Total = 18 + 32 + 34 = 84%.

Inputs explained

Score

Your average percentage for that specific category.

Weight

How much that category counts towards the final grade. Total weights should ideally add up to 100%.

Understanding your results

The Weighted Average is your current standing in the class. If your weights don't add up to 100% yet (e.g., Final Exam not taken), the result shows your grade *based on the work completed so far*.

Example scenarios

Syllabus Example

HW 20% (Score 100), Quizzes 30% (Score 80), Exams 50% (Score 70). Calculation: (100*.2) + (80*.3) + (70*.5) = 20 + 24 + 35 = 79%.

Key Features

  • Supports 4 Categories
  • Partial Weight Support
  • Instant Average

Tips & Best Practices

  • Check your syllabus! Weights are the rules of the game.
  • If you ace the small stuff (homework), it provides a buffer for harder exams.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
The calculator divides the total weighted score by the *total weight entered*. This means you can calculate your current grade even if you haven't done the Final Exam yet.
How is this different from a normal average?
A normal average treats every item equally. A weighted average acknowledges that some items (like a Final Exam) are much more important than others (like a daily quiz).
